HBO is developing a new adaptation of Clifford Odets' 1950 play The Country Girl with Sex and the City co-star Kim Cattrall attached to star and co-executive produce.

The story centers on Frank Elgin, a washed-up, middle-aged actor who is given a chance to come back with a lead role in a stage musical but, driven by insecurity, turns to alcohol and self-pity and leaves everything in the hands of his loyal wife, Georgie, who has to fight for him to keep the job.

Cattrall optioned the rights to the play on her own and will produce the telepic.

The drama revolves around the drug dealer who landed on the FBI's most wanted list for the kidnapping and murder of a teenager whose brother owed the dealer money. The 15-year-old was lured to Santa Barbara, where he hung out with the drug dealer's associates. The thugs then hit the youth over the head with a shovel and shot him nine times. One killer got the death penalty, another a 25 years-to-life sentence. Hollywood is still at large.

The film will be produced by Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio with production set for fall.

Mike Newell Confirmed for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Mike Newell has agreed to direct Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the fourth film in the smash-hit series for Warner Bros. Pictures. The announcement was made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures. Newell most recently completed production on Mona Lisa Smile, starring Julia Roberts, and is also known for directing such critical and popular successes as Four Weddings and A Funeral, Enchanted April and Donnie Brasco.

Production on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is scheduled to begin in England in April, 2004. David Heyman will produce and Steve Kloves will write the screenplay for the film, which is slated for release worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures in late 2005. Newell will be the first British director to helm a Harry Potter movie; the films are based on the best-selling series of books by J.K. Rowling and are set in the U.K.

The first two movies in the Harry Potter series broke worldwide records with a combined box-office gross of nearly $1.9 billion. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third film in the series, is currently being filmed under the direction of Alfonso Cuaron at Leavesden Studios and on location in England and Scotland. However, since the production schedules for that picture and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will overlap, it became infeasible for the same director to oversee both projects.

"We're really happy to bring Mike on board to direct this movie," said Robinov. "He has the ability to get tremendous performances from his actors, and handles drama and comedy equally well. We've been lucky to have worked with excellent filmmakers on the first three Harry Potter movies and we are looking forward to continuing that tradition as we start on this next movie with Mike."

Agreed Heyman, "When Alfonso made the decision to focus on completing 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,' we were faced with the daunting task of finding a director to handle the complex challenges of 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' and to follow in the footsteps of Chris Columbus and Alfonso Cuaron. Mike's rich and diverse body of work show him to be the perfect choice. He has worked with children, made us laugh, and had us sitting on the edge of our seats. He is great with actors and imbues all his characters, all his films, with great humanity. I'm thrilled."

Phillip Wen Adapting Kopps

Columbia Pictures has hired Phillip Wen (ABC's Spin City) to adapt the Swedish film Kopps as a project for Adam Sandler to produce.

The film is the story of a small town that's so crime-free the local police station is about to be closed. Desperate to save their jobs, two officers go on a crime spree in hopes of proving the station's necessity.

What hard-core Pixar fans really want to know is: Where's the Pizza Planet truck?

The battered yellow pickup with a white camper shell and a light-up plastic rocket ship, advertising the fictional Pizza Planet franchise, played a key role in Pixar's first feature, 1995's "Toy Story." Strangely enough, it has become Pixar's most recurring image, popping up, Hitchcock-like, in every picture the studio has made.

"We have two rules in our movies," says Andrew Stanton, who wrote and directed "Finding Nemo," which is being released Friday by Disney. "Get the Pizza Planet truck in there somewhere and always have John Ratzenberger be a voice." The former gets its most fleeting cameo ever in "Nemo," whizzing past a dentist's office where a major part of the film is set, while the latter, whom Stanton calls "our good-luck charm," gives voice to an entire school of fish.

They also mention the following:

Cowgirl Jessie from "Toy Story 2" made a cameo appearance in "Monsters, Inc." Similarly, orb-eyed Mike from "Monsters" can be seen snorkeling past the camera in "Finding Nemo." Buzz Lightyear also shows up in "Nemo," as do characters from two upcoming Pixar films, 2004's "The Incredibles" and 2005's "Cars." In addition to providing hours of freeze-framed entertainment for today's DVD generation, this character cross-pollination, says Stanton, is also a sign of a TV kid in the 1960s. "We all remember when the Beverly Hillbillies went on 'Petticoat Junction,' or when the Green Hornet was on 'Batman,' " he says. "That rocked our world when we were kids, so we said, 'Why not?' "

Empire Online received some new pictures from the Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason set in the U.K.

Fans of the first film will remember Borough Market as the location of Bridget's flat and the scene of the wonderful, 'It's a real live fight!' between Hugh Grant and Colin Firth's characters. Storyline:

'Cosmo' pointed us to a great interview with Andy Serkis, who again plays Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. We saw the digital character a lot in "The Two Towers," what can we expect for the third and final film?

Just to finish up, do we get to see a lot more of you in The Return of the King?
Oh, yes. Gollum's fate is very much bound up with Frodo and the ring. It just gets amped up the further they go on their journey towards Mount Doom, it gets more desperate and the stakes get higher - it's got a pretty great climax.
